August House, organized by Jess Ramsay and Untitled Queen
An Art Residency Project
Presented by EFA Project Space’s SHIFT Residency for Arts Workers
August 1-31st, 2022
323 West 39th Street, 10th Floor
Artists Jess Ramsay and EFA SHIFT Residency Alum Untitled Queen have developed their own residency program called August House, whose namesake is inspired by February House, a Queer artist colony established in Brooklyn in the 1940s. Jess and Untitled have invited 3 artists from intersectional groups, centering Queer Black Indigenous POC community members to join them for the month. The featured residents are Junior Mintt, Sam Hamashima, and Voxigma Lo.
Instead of focusing on material/product-based projects and outcomes, residents seek to delve into process and sharing, harkening back to intimate, soulful, joyful artist gathering and connection-making. During the course of the month the resident artists will host conversations and studio visits with folks across our combined communities. Our deep engagement and interactivity is inspired by dinner parties, house parties, Queer nightclubs, poetry readings, jam sessions, cookouts, book clubs, listening rooms, performance art, storytelling, radical activism and so much more. August house draws inspiration from research of previous Queer artist enclaves, collectives, and residencies, and seeks to forefront and expand upon their strategies for decolonizing, thrivance, meaning, organizing, experiencing, being present, enjoyment, and art-making.
A closing event / open studios for the residency will take place on Saturday August 27.
