In conjunction with Beyond a Memorable Fancy, EFA Project Space presents an evening of direct experimental film organized by participating artist David Gatten.

The line-up:

MOXON’S MECHANICK EXERCISES, OR THE DOCTRINE OF HANDY-WORKS APPLIED TO THE ART OF PRINTING by David Gatten

SAUGUS SERIES by Pat O’Neill

FOGGY MOUNTAINS BREAKDOWN MORE THAN NON-FOGGY MOUNTAINS by Jessie Stead

David Gatten, Moxon’s Mechanic Exercises, or the Doctrine of Handy-Works Applied To The Art of Printing, 1999, 26 minutes, silent - 18 fps, black & white 16mm film

This handmade film, generated by transferring type onto blank film, is meditation on the development of the printing press and its role in the spread of Christianity throughout Europe, the poetics of translation, the
relationship between text and image, and the passage of the soul through the material world.

Pat O’Neill, Saugus Series, 1974, 16mm, color/so, 18 minutes

These seven short films, each an evolving “still life,” are a complex study of meaning and perception. The film, assembled from a meticulous collage of images that contain ambiguous spatial clues, confronts the viewer with contradictory sensations of space, an imbalanced perception of reality.

Jessie Stead, Foggy Mountains Breakdown More Than Non-Foggy Mountains, 2006, mixed media on digital video 59 minutes

Contemplating issues of re-interpretation and the connectivity of socio-cultural landscapes, Foggy Mountains Breakdown More Than Non-Foggy Mountains is an absurdo-epic, meandering travelogue of moving image,
voice, text, animation and several versions of the bluegrass standard, “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.”
